A Few Words About Me

Since I can't know exactly what information you may find important in order to decide if I'm the right counselor for you, here's a little general background about me.

Bill Herring is an Atlanta counselor and certified sex addiction therapist

A Caring Atlanta Psychotherapist for Sensitive Personal Issues

I started my private counseling practice in Atlanta over 25 years ago after earning my stripes in various post-graduate mental health positions.  That in itself means that I've had the honor to work with lots of different kinds of people and situations for a significant portion of my life.

If you become my client what is going to help you as much or more than my education and training is a desire to understand, a genuine compassion and a fundamental respect for the human journey -- as well as a sincere joy in your progress.  I want you to get better, however that means to you, and I'll bring an active and engaging style of guidance, insight, support and feedback to help that to happen.

Individuals seek my help for anxiety, depression, addictions, relationship problems and many other life challenges.  Couples come to me to deepen their affection, improve their communication, rebuild damaged trust and achieve other goals related to a satisfying relationship.

An Atlanta Expert On Issues of Chronic Infidelity, Pornography Problems, Complex Betrayal and Sex Addiction

I have a national reputation in the area of problematic sexual behaviors such as repeated infidelities, excessive use of pornography and other patterns of sexual behavior that don't support a happy and healthy life.

I'm a  Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) and have writen enough professional articles to have developed substantial standing in my profession.  I am a former board member of the Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health (SASH), where I chaired this organization's national conference for three years.  I am a long-standing member of the editorial board of the journal Sexual Addiction & Compulsivity. I am well known across my profession for respectfully but consistently challenging the field of sex addiction to "up its game' by examining some of its assumptions and biases regarding sexual diversity.  Anyone wanting to know more detail about the history of my efforts in this regard can read my chapter in "Reflections on the History of the Sex Addiction Field", a recently published book by 15 contributors.  More recently I've been instrumental developing a national training program to help mental health professionals learn how to better help people with problematic sexual behaviors.

I also have a very strong focus on helping spouses and other partners of sexual betrayers address and heal from the complex trauma of discovery and disclosure.  I'm the only Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) in Atlanta who is also a Certified Clinical Partner Specialist through the Association of Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists (APSATS), which greatly strengthens the assistance I am able to provide to betrayed partners.

Since I have significant expertise in this specialized area I have more information about my approach to problematic sexual behavior.

I offer individual, couples and group counseling.  I also offer one-time (single session) consultations to help people figure out what's going on and what to do about it.

Unparalleled Privacy, Comfort and Personalized Attention

While I help people from all walks of life, I'm able to offer an exceptional level of privacy for those in high profile or sensitive positions.  Upper level executives, physicians, attorneys, therapists, and public figures appreciate the discretion and heightened confidentiality of my convenient yet secluded office setting.  Our confidential conversations are protected by strong federal and state laws governing privileged communication.

I hope this brief description will help you decide whether I'm the right person for your specific needs. If you have any questions, or if you're ready to set up a time to meet in person to discuss what is happening in your life and how I can help, I welcome you to contact me directly.

-Bill
